For drone owners, Christmas time really happens in January with the annual CES show in Las
Vegas. The show opened today with Autel announcing
the upcoming release of the Autel Evo 2, and if this drone lives up to its specs, it may
be the best drone of 2020 when it is released. The Evo 2 features an 8K camera at 24 or 25
frames per second – it shoots 6k resolution at 30 frames per second and 4K resolution
up to 60 frames per second, and it has a bitrate of 120 megabits per second. It also shoots 48 megapixel still images in
JPEG or DNG, and supports burst modes and HDR. The Evo 2 features 360 degree obstacle avoidance
with 12 sensing cameras and boasts a range of 11 kilometers –
and flight times up to 40 minutes. Getting excited yet? Need more? How about interchangeable cameras? Yep, the Evo 2 has three different cameras,
including a thermal dual camera. Watch this episode of Drone News 2020 to learn

  1. CES opened with Autel announcing the upcoming release of the Autel Evo 2, and if this drone lives up to its specs, it may be the best drone of 2020 when it is released.

    How about interchangeable cameras?

  2. I feel like this drone is marketed to Professional videographers and photographers and Enterprise/commercial customers. Not hobbyists or casual photographers that were making great YouTube videos of their adventures.

In order to render 6K video you'd have to have not only some serious storage but also a hell of a beast of a computer…. And that's 6K! 8K? I doubt very many people will really be running 8K since there really is no point unless you are Enterprise or a professional videographer. 6k and 8k offer great advantages for sure, like lossless zoom in post, better color grading since you have muh more information to work with. But to render all that you'd crash your system unless it was a 10th gen Intel i9 with NVIDIA Quadra or 2080 TI dual video card with minimum 64GB ram and 2TB minimum SSD drive.

If it lives up to it's marketing oh yeah! It will be the best drone out there…. For pros and Enterprise. The 6K version is $1799. Not a bad price. The 8K version is their base model at $1499! Perfect pricing for sure and you can apparently get the cameras separately. The Dual thermal option is not priced yet but given that it is using the 8K sensor and a 640×512 Flir Boson sensor it will be a minimum of $3000!

My point is that with the Phantom 4 coming back and the Mavic 3 on its way presumably, while the price is about right I just can't wrap my head around who would get this with the expectation that they could use the 8K or 6K video given 90% of drone operators can barely render 4K properly with their computers.

Plus, 90% of drone video viewing is done on mobile screens or laptops or small to mid size desktops. So 8K and 6K are realitvely pointless for those screen sizes…. Yes you can do more in post with 8K and 6K as I mentioned but it will be interesting to see who get this and how it's used. I just think they should have offered a $1200 version with a 1inch 4K camera with 120fps.
